I’ve been spending a lot of time in the tub (see Detox Bath Review www.modernsage.com) and with that comes relaxitation: meditation in the tub. As I was finishing a bath recently and watching the water drain, I began thinking about drains in general. Sink drains, tub drains, physical drains, emotional drains.
We think that small negative ‘things’ in our lives don’t affect the whole. We try to isolate a stressor and believe that it’s not wreaking havoc on our other affairs. But, think of the drain. What happens in the sink when a small bean clogs one of the drain holes? The water still goes down, but at a slower pace. Think of that drain with several food particles from the dinner plate, covering a many holes. A much slower drain, indeed. Even tiny hairs in the sink can quickly cause a complete clog. Meet plunger, your new assistant.
Imagine that those food particles or hair strands represent negative stressors in your life.
In a healthy state of mind, we want life to be less cumbersome. We seek happiness, love, positive movement and a continuous gentle flow. Life thrives in these environments. To think that one negative factor (be it a person, habit, debt, burdensome weight or addiction) is not causing your entire life to be more difficult (less thriving) is false thinking. No matter what is clogging your drain, be it small or large, your life is being held back from the movement it is trying to make.
Maybe it’s time to start clearing out some blockages in your life, to remove the beans and pull out the gnarly hairs so that your life-force can flow freely.
Enjoy your holiday. Give thanks for all that is brilliantly *alive* in your life and consider how much time you are spending plunging the same issues that are holding you back.
(I highly suggest tub relaxitation for further discoveries.)

Friday, November 26th, 2010Tip: Negative Energy Release
Thursday, September 9th, 2010
It’s easy to accumulate stress, negative thoughts, emotions and energy. It’s also easy to feel drained, fatigued and overly stressed. I’m sure you know someone that you would classify as “an energy vampire” – they just suck the life right out of you!! Here’s a simple way to rebalance your energy and release negativity. And the best part is… it’s in the tub!!
You will need 3 things. A plain candle (small or large), a natural soothing fragrance (I suggest organic essential oils like lavendar, vanilla, orange or even lemon) and a tub.
Prepare a warm/hot bath. Light the candle and put near tub water. Use the natural essential oils in the bath water or on the candle. Turn out the light.
Lie in the water with as much of your body underneath as possible. Try to relax your body and mind and stare at the candle. Just stare. Let thoughts come and go. Continue staring. Imagine all of your worries, stress, thoughts, everything, just going into the candle flame and gently burning. Do this for about 15 minutes.
After this 15 minute exercise, release the drain on the tub and lie back and watch all of the water go down the drain. After the last bit is down, stand up and rinse off with cool water in the shower.
Trust me – this is a powerful and refreshing exercise. If I go more than 2 weeks without practicing it, I feel very “bound up” and off balance. Give it a try. It’s a healthy living tip that is worth every minute for your body and mind!
Keep Your Eye on the Ball
Wednesday, December 2nd, 2009I’ll never forget these words. My dad used to yell them at me during my whole softball career. I was a decent hitter, but you couldn’t always count on it. I WANTED to get a hit, but being a teen, I was too busy thinking about what my hair looked like coming out of that helmet. Was my butt sticking out too far? Who was watching? With a wandering mind, the ball often came and went without contact or went flying too high with an easy drop into the opponent’s glove. “Keep your eye on the ball, Leah” I heard my dad say. I now find myself saying these same words as I focus on what I WANT out of life in general.
What do you want? Better yet, what is distracting you from GETTING what you want? Is your eye on the ball? It’s so easy these days to have A.D.D. All of the activities and gadgets, it’s a wonder we get anything of value accomplished! When you want something – be it weight loss, a dream, a better relationship or a hit out of the ballpark, you gotta keep your eye on the ball. No exceptions. If you think you may suffer from genuine A.D.D. or just have an awful time focusing your attention, there are great remedies that can help you tremendously. DHA and other Omega 3 fatty acids are excellent brain foods that have been proven to help concentration, clarity and calmness. Gingko will get that blood flowing, and if you suffer from an anxious mind. Personally, I use L-Theanine for calm, focused thinking. Meditating for even 5 min/day can calm the mind and help you to focus & Biofeedback is another great technique you might want to check out to keep your mind’s eye on target. Balance your brain and your body with nature’s help. Whatever you are going for, do it with a focused mind. Keep your eye on the ball and give it your best swing!
3 Areas of Health
Wednesday, December 2nd, 2009Each of these categories offers celebrity endorsements and books/articles of conviction. We get swayed into one paradigm or the other- due in part to marketing campaigns. The propensity of our individual character wants to rely exclusively on one or the other (depending on your need to control or be passive) causing fixations and ocd behavior to be “right.”.Disorders stem from this type of imbalance, as do other forms of dis-ease. I mention the types below as more extreme scenarios to make a point. Each area is important, but cannot stand alone for optimal health.
1) You Are What You Eat – Food & exercise generally get the most attention in our appearance-obsessed world. Some believe that all health revolves around the physical body – what you put in, you’ll get out. It’s true that food and exercise can shape the health of the body and even affect mental well-being, but to ignore the other vital elements of well-being is a mistake. The extremists of “You Are What You Eat” use food/exercise as a means to control their environment, attempt to regulate suppressed addictions or anxieties and/or need an immediate sense of self-gratification. Diet restrictions, over-supplementation or obsessive exercise can become a mask for imbalances within. It becomes an attempt to cure all that ails you – be it emotional, mental, physical or spiritual. (This can include micro-managing calories/fats/carbs, happy pills (however natural), extreme food restrictions etc).
2) Mind Over Matter – This school of thought claims that you are what you think- that your mind has the power to make you well, happy and even defeat the affects of unhealthy food, negative emotions or toxic environments. Mind Over Matter claims big ‘secrets’ to a happy and healthy life, many of which are true, but again, a large disclaimer that cannot hold up to some of life’s toughest questions. Positive thinking does affect your world, and honestly it is critical to health, but to attempt to think yourself “well” without relying on other disciplines could lead to many a disorder – essentially a self-inflated mentality that what, avoids death & plays God? Norman Cousins may have laughed himself to eternity, but he’s not living to tell us about it now. The ‘secret’ is to know that you have control of your mind, not the other way around, and that positive thinking and a great attitude can influence your experience in this world.
3) Spiritual Specialists– There are many people of faith that rely on their spiritual practice, God or a belief system to carry them from illness to health, poverty to wealth or other drastic accomplishments without acceptance of their input or other worldly affairs. You might find one of these types escaping from the ‘real world’ to dwell on a mountain top, or a parent declining medication for their child but opting for prayer and faith-healing instead. I’m not discounting spiritual practices – my faith is a large part of my life and I know that prayers and meditation make a huge difference. But, without a pro-activity in the other categories (eating well, exercise, positive thinking, helping others) one runs the risk of becoming an uber-radical extremist – making choices that are unhealthy or unwise. We’ve read these stories.
I believe the key to healthy, vibrant living lies in balance of body, mind & spirit. It is the combination that propels the life-force within. It means acknowledging death as life and finding your purpose. Resolving feelings and thinking positively improves your wellness. Eating organic saves our land and improves our body systems. Praying to your Creator opens your heart and soul. Exercising will make you feel great and can enhance time with your children. Peace comes from sharing. Give energy to the mind, body & spirit equally for sustained health. This may or may not be news to you – either way, I hope you find it as a reminder to pay attention to how you are spending your energy, and your life.
