Second to weight loss and diet, I’m most frequently asked about what supplements are best. I do take a few, have tried a thousand and have strong opinions. A new study shows that many supplements are a waste of $$, and I pretty much agree. After years of experimenting, education and training I know full well that there is not ANY type of magic bullet suitable for all persons. Yes, there are supplements that can be extremely supportive for some conditions, but just popping a once-a-day off-brand multi from the drugstore will do little except drain your wallet.
I’ve always believed in whole food nutrition to get what your body needs for health and to support an organic lifestyle. I think you can eat your way to health, with the occasion supplement for targeted issues, if you have them. I prefer to eat than to pop pills, and mostly, I can get what I need. However, there are a few specialty supplements that do seem to help me. Here’s what I take: Vitamin D, fish oil, a magnesium powder drink at night, and on occasion, digestive enzymes. If I feel mentally, physically or emotionally drained, I’ll supplement with licorice root extract to aid my adrenal glands. That’s it. If I get sick, I reach for a homeopathic treatment or herbs to help me through it, and I pack in some green powder from a whole foods company I trust. If you do want to supplement your diet with a supplement, I suggest spending a few extra bucks for a supplement in either powder or capsule form, made from whole foods. Ask a person at the place you buy supplements what whole food supplements they have. If they don’t know, don’t buy. For goodness sake, stop wasting your money on a generic multi full of isolated vitamins and minerals. It’s a waste. That’s not a natural way to deliver or absorb nutrients into your body. Eat an orange, try some fresh plain yogurt, load up on veggies and exercise. Keeping your immune system, digestive organs, heart and lungs healthy with nutrient-rich foods and plenty of movement is the best way to preventive health.

I’m A Christian & I do Yoga
Thursday, October 7th, 2010
In response to the recent headline news from an ill-informed Southern Baptist leader in my home state of KY, (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/39553520/ns/us_news-life/) I’d like to offer a bit of Christian enlightenment to the forum.
God loves my down-dog. As does my yorkie, Corkie. We do it together and I’m not sure, but I believe he’s a Christian too.
For the past 15 years I’ve been practicing yoga. For the past 25 years I’ve been practicing a Christian faith. I do sun salutations with God in my heart and Jesus as my Savior. What a wonderful gift to my creator to move my body with such ease, freedom and joy to the glory of His name. Perhaps I’m really living on the edge, but I confess that, most likely, I practice yoga with people of different religions, cultures and colors. I accept them and their beliefs.
Yoga is a systemic science. Christianity is a faith. What I can tell you with absolute certainty is that Albert Mohler is misleading his congregation/students/followers with a message that is harmful to Christians: that they simply cannot or should not practice yoga and be a Christian. This is a disgrace.
Yoga is not a religion. Yes, there are religions that implement yoga. So one could say that yoga is in some religions but religion is not in yoga. There is no deity in yoga. A warrior pose will not make one Buddhist or Hindu. Does eating hummus make one Greek? Or enchiladas Mexican? If so, I am a Greek Mexican.
The practice of yoga can be done religiously – as in, with fevor and discipline. Yoga influences the body structure, the organs, the breath, the mind and the spirit indeed. All wonderful. Yoga frees stress from the body and offers an opportunity to connect with our inner selves – aligning our hearts and minds with our spirit and that, my friend, is a beautiful thing. These aspects of a physical practice bring great awareness to our health and environment in many aspects. Yoga does not, however, require a faith, an idol or a religious opinion. If you learn the definition of yoga (union) and some other yoga-ish terms that are often present in a class or chant, you will discover things like forgiveness, honoring the divine present in each individual, open heartedness. These are honorable and considerate attributes that no one should fear, and perhaps similarly, ones that many religions strive to teach.
If you want to eat a jalapeno, you will not become Mexican.
If you get acupuncture, you will not become Chinese.
If you do yoga, you will not become Hindu.
If you accept God into your heart, you will practice living with a faith in Christ as a Christian.
All of the above can be woven into a life rich with half-moons, one-legged pigeon poses, vinyasas and the ever humbling downward-facing-dog. If times get difficult, I suggest the child’s pose – it’s perfect for prayer.
Tip: Negative Energy Release
Thursday, September 9th, 2010
It’s easy to accumulate stress, negative thoughts, emotions and energy. It’s also easy to feel drained, fatigued and overly stressed. I’m sure you know someone that you would classify as “an energy vampire” – they just suck the life right out of you!! Here’s a simple way to rebalance your energy and release negativity. And the best part is… it’s in the tub!!
You will need 3 things. A plain candle (small or large), a natural soothing fragrance (I suggest organic essential oils like lavendar, vanilla, orange or even lemon) and a tub.
Prepare a warm/hot bath. Light the candle and put near tub water. Use the natural essential oils in the bath water or on the candle. Turn out the light.
Lie in the water with as much of your body underneath as possible. Try to relax your body and mind and stare at the candle. Just stare. Let thoughts come and go. Continue staring. Imagine all of your worries, stress, thoughts, everything, just going into the candle flame and gently burning. Do this for about 15 minutes.
After this 15 minute exercise, release the drain on the tub and lie back and watch all of the water go down the drain. After the last bit is down, stand up and rinse off with cool water in the shower.
Trust me – this is a powerful and refreshing exercise. If I go more than 2 weeks without practicing it, I feel very “bound up” and off balance. Give it a try. It’s a healthy living tip that is worth every minute for your body and mind!
12 Week Energy Series Kickoff!
Tuesday, July 20th, 2010You are used to me writing about health – food, relationships, supplements, alternative treatments. You may not know that I’ve studied energy healing for over 15 years, working with energy of the body, auric fields, energy as it relates to relationships and even our homes. So, I’m starting a 12 week series of blog posts relating to this fascinating topic and how it affects all areas of our health including physical, emotional, mental and spiritual and relational. Energy is a force of life and a God-given instrument to enhance our wellbeing. The posts will go live by each Tues of the week until mid-October! So, join in regularly and post your experiences so we can all learn from each other.
You may have heard of energy fields, auras, chakras or meridians that correlate to your bodysystems in Eastern medicine. We’ll look at all of these aspects and the energy of your emotions, thoughts, foods and more. There are little tricks in the home you can do to increase positive energy, as well as energy tune-ups for increased health and wellness. I’ll talk about how to protect your energy (from negative people or places) and how to project your energy. This is information that will help you feel better, handle stress and life better and potentially heal from long-standing issues that have been “in your energy field” that you will now be able to release. There’s no voodoo involved, or strange & wacky ceremonies. Just great energy information to assist you on your life’s journey. See you next Tuesday!

Breaking the Detox Cleanse
Thursday, May 13th, 2010Hooray! I am now officially finished with the 30-day cleanse, how are you coming along? Some have reported a nice amount of weight loss, new energy and a break of food or caffeine addiction – I’m thrilled!!
An important phase of cleansing is the “breaking the cleanse” period. Hopefully by now you have been accustomed to eating in a healthier way, have broken addictions to sugar and caffeine and your system is rejoicing – but you are probably wondering, “Can I resume eating dairy, gluten and sugar immediately following the cleanse?”
Immediately following the cleanse, you want to continue drinking ample amounts of pure water and eating many of the same healthy veggies and fruits found on the cleansing program (see blog entry Shopping List). One of the reasons I enjoy the longer cleanse is that the period of time being free of sugar, gluten and dairy helps break the cycle of food addiction. This is a great opportunity to practice the “elimination” diet, but in reverse. In other words, after a few days of breaking the cran-water protocol, you may introduce one of the forbidden food groups, i.e. dairy, into your diet – slowly. Only adding one of the forbidden foods at a time will allow you to notice what affect that food has on your body. If, after a week or so, you seem to be adjusting to dairy well, enjoy it moderately and then add one of the other food groups like gluten. In doing this, you should notice right away any allergies or affects from each group. Give it time and be aware. After reintroducing dairy, are you getting headaches? Do you feel stuffed up or notice sinus problems? How are your bowels and/or energy levels? Ask these questions after slowly reintroducing the foods. Some people (myself included) have opted to go with a gluten-free/low gluten diet as my stomach and elimination organs seem to operate at a higher level without all that gluten!
Exit the cleanse as you started – with great awareness, commitment and desire for a healthy and rejuvenated body! There’s only positive to be had with a diet full of healthy fats, proteins and natural carbs from veggies and fruits with a few clean grains “on-the-side”!
Supplements – How Natural Are They?
Wednesday, April 28th, 2010
In my profession, I have opportunities to interact with a crowd that usually goes unnoticed: the raw ingredients/material manufacturers & suppliers of our supplement and beauty industry. Until you actually have the chance to talk to someone in that field, it’s a job that’s given little thought, one that’s behind the scenes. We have a tendency to trust what we don’t see – a strange human phenomenon – like sitting in a chair without a clue of its stability or the manufacturer’s quality control. It’s just there and those people that make chairs must know what they’re doing, so we believe…
As a former natural foods/beauty store manager & buyer, always a consumer and in recent years a public advocate for health and wellness, it is always a fascinating experience to meet with the companies, individuals and resources that are behind the scenes in supplementation. In hope of attaining even more healthy living tips, I recently attended a national expo where many of the raw ingredient distributors were on display.
What I noticed while walking the isles & taking in the vast amount of herbs, vitamins, gel caps and powders is an industry like most others in the world – a garden of good & evil. The suppliers of raw materials that make-up your supplements and OTC’s provide amazing products that are pure and potent, matched with a technology that utilizes their fullest potential. AND, there are companies that are full of inconsistencies and corporate structures trying to plump up the pockets of their execs at the expense of product integrity, and your health.
So, how can we be sure what we are taking is actually healthy and not just a chemically derived substance produced to mask as a “natural ingredient” that may be harmful to our health? It’s difficult, but with research, can be done.
We live in a nation that distributes supplements freely – a positive and a negative – so all ingredients do not have to be listed, noted or approved by a governing agent. Anyone can formulate a product, most anything goes (with the exception of a few banned substances) and there’s not a national watchdog with any great authority on behalf of the consumer, unless of course you’re a highly visible athlete and have irregular testings. Clearly, it’s up to you to be the gate-keeper of what goes into your body.
With research, most substances on supplement labels have a name that will register somewhere on the internet with a definition, link-to or English name for the Latin or otherwise listed. However, some companies use a “proprietary blend” of which the ingredients don’t have to be revealed. You’ll often see this in herbal formulas, sports supplements and energy or weight-loss products. In my opinion, I would steer clear of such concoctions. If a company can’t disclose exactly what is in their product, why should you trust them? Any supplement I take I know not only the specific ingredients, but usually the background of the company itself.
It can be hard to catch some of the long, multi-hyphenated compounds or amino acids complexes, but you should be able to find at least the main part of the ingredient and what it does, its history, reactions, uses, etc, on the web or in reference. If not, it may likely be a chemically modified substance that may or may not be safe to put into your body.
For a synergistic, effective product that works with the body, I recommend food-based supplements. The technology we have allows for our food sources to be dried, extracted, powdered and combined in a way that provides a safe and reliable product – one that is in greater harmony with the natural chemistry of our bodies. There are some amazing supplement formulas that contain full disclosure, real food ingredients and you will get the right amount of nutrients your body needs with proper dose.
I love the natural food and supplement industry, but no industry is perfect. Just because a bottle looks inviting and prints words like “All Natural” or “Cold Relief with Echinacea” does not mean that someone that resembles your grandmother is in a large kitchen concocting beautiful, natural ingredients and fancily labeling them with love. You have to use discernment, do your research and see if what you are ingesting is actually beneficial to your health or just a chemical agent that will line the pockets of some obscure CEO of a “dietary supplement company.”
Feedback and Recipes!
Saturday, April 17th, 2010It’s day 3 of the cleanse and I wanted to give a report, along with a couple of my fav recipes! So far, I feel good. Yesterday had quite a strong craving for sugar, but knocked it out by using stevia in my cranberry juice mix before & after dinner. Have seen a small skin rash/blemish near my ankle, which is actually a good sign. Often as
toxins begin releasing, we see skin outbreaks, rashes, etc. Don’t be alarmed. It should clear up in a couple of days as the cleanse takes these toxins out of the body.
With food, I want to make sure everyone is EATING ENOUGH! This is not a starvation cleanse, and you can eat plenty of foods, as long as it’s the right foods. Try to include even more fresh vegetables each day – even at breakfast! I will often incorporate at least one veggie in my breakfast – like spinach or tomato or celery. It can be done! If you are going to cheat (a tad bit) it’s best to do it during week two or three. A good, clean cheat is Dr. Praeger’s spinach or brocolli pancakes (they have a bit of potato in them) or veggie burgers. They are yummy!
RECIPES:
HUMMUS
Someone asked about chickpeas, and yes, they are allowed. I love to make fresh hummus and it is delicious!
Fresh or canned garbanzo beans
Blend with mixer.
Slowly add olive oil until creamy (not runny)
Add garlic powder and fresh lemon juice to taste.
Scoop with veggies, ricecakes or add to a salad!
BROWN RICE BOWL
This is a standby for me. It is so easy and simply yummy and satisfying.
Cook 1/2 cup brown rice
Cook 1/4 – 1/2 lb ground turkey, chicken or lamb
Optional: lightly cooked garlic pieces
While warm, put brown rice in bowl, top with fresh baby spinach leaves, veggies of choice (cucumber, carrots, tomato, onion, kale (steamed), radish, etc)
Put ground meat on top of veggies
Top with sesame seeds &/or a sprinkling of raisins (a slight cheat)
Drizzle with olive oil and fresh lemon juice.
(When not on cleanse, you can add feta cheese for a dish that is out of this world!)
