In response to the recent headline news from an ill-informed Southern Baptist leader in my home state of KY, (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/39553520/ns/us_news-life/) I’d like to offer a bit of Christian enlightenment to the forum.
God loves my down-dog. As does my yorkie, Corkie. We do it together and I’m not sure, but I believe he’s a Christian too.
For the past 15 years I’ve been practicing yoga. For the past 25 years I’ve been practicing a Christian faith. I do sun salutations with God in my heart and Jesus as my Savior. What a wonderful gift to my creator to move my body with such ease, freedom and joy to the glory of His name. Perhaps I’m really living on the edge, but I confess that, most likely, I practice yoga with people of different religions, cultures and colors. I accept them and their beliefs.
Yoga is a systemic science. Christianity is a faith. What I can tell you with absolute certainty is that Albert Mohler is misleading his congregation/students/followers with a message that is harmful to Christians: that they simply cannot or should not practice yoga and be a Christian. This is a disgrace.
Yoga is not a religion. Yes, there are religions that implement yoga. So one could say that yoga is in some religions but religion is not in yoga. There is no deity in yoga. A warrior pose will not make one Buddhist or Hindu. Does eating hummus make one Greek? Or enchiladas Mexican? If so, I am a Greek Mexican.
The practice of yoga can be done religiously – as in, with fevor and discipline. Yoga influences the body structure, the organs, the breath, the mind and the spirit indeed. All wonderful. Yoga frees stress from the body and offers an opportunity to connect with our inner selves – aligning our hearts and minds with our spirit and that, my friend, is a beautiful thing. These aspects of a physical practice bring great awareness to our health and environment in many aspects. Yoga does not, however, require a faith, an idol or a religious opinion. If you learn the definition of yoga (union) and some other yoga-ish terms that are often present in a class or chant, you will discover things like forgiveness, honoring the divine present in each individual, open heartedness. These are honorable and considerate attributes that no one should fear, and perhaps similarly, ones that many religions strive to teach.
If you want to eat a jalapeno, you will not become Mexican.
If you get acupuncture, you will not become Chinese.
If you do yoga, you will not become Hindu.
If you accept God into your heart, you will practice living with a faith in Christ as a Christian.
All of the above can be woven into a life rich with half-moons, one-legged pigeon poses, vinyasas and the ever humbling downward-facing-dog. If times get difficult, I suggest the child’s pose – it’s perfect for prayer.

Thursday, October 7th, 2010Eastern Energy Healing

“You ought not to heal the body without the soul, for this is the great error of our day in treating the human body.” – Plato
One of my favorite ways to learn more about the body and our brilliant energy system is to experience it first-hand. Eastern medicine has taught us a lot about healing on a physical and soul level, incorporating the holistic approach to balance and health. Most Eastern (oriental) medicine is meridian-based.. meaning that it works on the level of the energy system and the corresponding “map” which we call meridians. They are channels of which the energy of your body flows. If you’ve ever been to an acupuncturist, you probably know what I’m talking about. For instance; you may have a problem with fatigue or bowel troubles, and the acupuncturist places needles in a pattern along your shin. The treatment affects the ailed area, but not from direct manipulation. In essence, the acupuncturist is working on the energy meridian that corresponds to the flow of “qi” to the afflicted area in order to restore health. May sound obscure, but it’s been tested and proven effective time and again.
Wanna experience eastern energy healing yourself? Some of my favorite Eastern healing modalities are Qi Gong (a physical practice using breath and movement), Chinese Cupping, Acupuncture, and Tui Na Massage. As our body and minds work together, much wisdom can be gained about our incredible energy system by experiencing these techniques! With first-hand experience, you’ll witness some of the finest healthy living tips known from centuries past that can restore health. Enjoy – and let your chi (qi) flow!
Relationships to Food
Tuesday, July 6th, 2010More people than you realize have an eating disorder. In general, our relationships to food have gone from necessity to abuse. People eat for the wrong reasons, over-eat, under-eat, are addicted to eating or have specific food addictions, and furthermore, we eat stuff that isn’t even really food. How do I know? Been there, done that.
Food is one of the few things that can keep us alive or kill us. We need it to live, and with great nutrition we can thrive. If food is abused, it will kill. A tight rope to walk? Not really. I find one simple way to navigate through the overly-marketed industry of food is to ask 2 questions:
1 – What is it?
2 – Why should I eat it?
The answers to these questions, if honest, will let you know if you have a relationship with food that is healthy or a disorder. If you don’t really know what a particular “food” item is, you can probably guess it’s not food. This may include chemicals or engineered products. Yes, you can eat these things, but they do not nurture you and were not made to ingest. In fact, many of these “food” items create chemical additions in the brain and bodily reactions that are very harmful. Steer clear.
The second question seems like a no-brainer, but is far from it…
Why should you eat that? Is it real food? Are you really hungry, or eating away your feelings? Does it provide your body with energy, protein, cleansing nutrients? Do you have an addiction to this food? Do you feel good when you eat this food?
Our bodies are wise creations and will tell you when something isn’t right -even with our relationship to food. Eating disorders affect more than the young teen or older woman with a distorted self-image issue weight concerns. Disorders begin at any age, to any race or gender and encompass a mental, emotional and physical relationship to food.
Eat well. Eat delicious and nutritious foods. Use these questions to help you turn your relationship to food into a most reverant, life-giving experience!
3 Down, 1 to go!
Monday, May 3rd, 2010I’ve almost finished 3 weeks of the cleanse and I feel great! Do you? My cravings for sugar have vanished, my elimination organs are working better than ever, and my sleep has improved. One more week and the cleanse will be “over.”
For the final week of the cleanse (starting on Thursday for me) we will go back to the Week 1 plan in general, but continue to stay with the increased amounts of fiber and acai. So, you will be having the cran-water in the morning and evening and before and after every meal. Flax or psyllium in the morning and evening (1 1/2 -2 tbsp) and afternoon acai powder (1 1/2 – 2 scoops).
We are still eliminating sugar, dairy, gluten and caffeine.
It’s only one more week and I know you can do it! Will post some comments about “what to expect” later this week.
Supplements – How Natural Are They?
Wednesday, April 28th, 2010
In my profession, I have opportunities to interact with a crowd that usually goes unnoticed: the raw ingredients/material manufacturers & suppliers of our supplement and beauty industry. Until you actually have the chance to talk to someone in that field, it’s a job that’s given little thought, one that’s behind the scenes. We have a tendency to trust what we don’t see – a strange human phenomenon – like sitting in a chair without a clue of its stability or the manufacturer’s quality control. It’s just there and those people that make chairs must know what they’re doing, so we believe…
As a former natural foods/beauty store manager & buyer, always a consumer and in recent years a public advocate for health and wellness, it is always a fascinating experience to meet with the companies, individuals and resources that are behind the scenes in supplementation. In hope of attaining even more healthy living tips, I recently attended a national expo where many of the raw ingredient distributors were on display.
What I noticed while walking the isles & taking in the vast amount of herbs, vitamins, gel caps and powders is an industry like most others in the world – a garden of good & evil. The suppliers of raw materials that make-up your supplements and OTC’s provide amazing products that are pure and potent, matched with a technology that utilizes their fullest potential. AND, there are companies that are full of inconsistencies and corporate structures trying to plump up the pockets of their execs at the expense of product integrity, and your health.
So, how can we be sure what we are taking is actually healthy and not just a chemically derived substance produced to mask as a “natural ingredient” that may be harmful to our health? It’s difficult, but with research, can be done.
We live in a nation that distributes supplements freely – a positive and a negative – so all ingredients do not have to be listed, noted or approved by a governing agent. Anyone can formulate a product, most anything goes (with the exception of a few banned substances) and there’s not a national watchdog with any great authority on behalf of the consumer, unless of course you’re a highly visible athlete and have irregular testings. Clearly, it’s up to you to be the gate-keeper of what goes into your body.
With research, most substances on supplement labels have a name that will register somewhere on the internet with a definition, link-to or English name for the Latin or otherwise listed. However, some companies use a “proprietary blend” of which the ingredients don’t have to be revealed. You’ll often see this in herbal formulas, sports supplements and energy or weight-loss products. In my opinion, I would steer clear of such concoctions. If a company can’t disclose exactly what is in their product, why should you trust them? Any supplement I take I know not only the specific ingredients, but usually the background of the company itself.
It can be hard to catch some of the long, multi-hyphenated compounds or amino acids complexes, but you should be able to find at least the main part of the ingredient and what it does, its history, reactions, uses, etc, on the web or in reference. If not, it may likely be a chemically modified substance that may or may not be safe to put into your body.
For a synergistic, effective product that works with the body, I recommend food-based supplements. The technology we have allows for our food sources to be dried, extracted, powdered and combined in a way that provides a safe and reliable product – one that is in greater harmony with the natural chemistry of our bodies. There are some amazing supplement formulas that contain full disclosure, real food ingredients and you will get the right amount of nutrients your body needs with proper dose.
I love the natural food and supplement industry, but no industry is perfect. Just because a bottle looks inviting and prints words like “All Natural” or “Cold Relief with Echinacea” does not mean that someone that resembles your grandmother is in a large kitchen concocting beautiful, natural ingredients and fancily labeling them with love. You have to use discernment, do your research and see if what you are ingesting is actually beneficial to your health or just a chemical agent that will line the pockets of some obscure CEO of a “dietary supplement company.”
Cleanse Instructions Week 2 & 3
Wednesday, April 21st, 2010Made it through the first week of the cleanse – are you still with me? I know some have started late, or are postponing, but here are the modifications for the next two weeks of the spring cleanse – when you are ready.
Week 2 & 3, we are still avoiding gluten, dairy, refined sugar and limiting or eliminating caffeine. The only modifications to the program will be with the drink and supplementation.
Every morning, still enjoy the water, then lemon water mix, then the cran-water with fiber. The only other time you will be making the cran-water is in the evening, again with the fiber. All other times you were drinking the cran-water in week 1, replace with room temperature water (filtered, please!).
As for the supplementation, increase the fiber (flax meal or psyllium) from 1 Tbsp to 1/5 Tbsp (2 for advanced cleansers), and increase the acai powder in the afternoon from 1 scoop to 1.5 scoops (2 for pros). Remember to include a morning detox tea, preferably a combo tea that includes dandelion, red clover, milk thistle, nettles, or similar herbs.
After the first 3 days, I think I’m past the sugar cravings. Generally, I’m feeling good and my “elimination” organs are working smoothly and daily!! Hope the same is true for you – let me know!! And, yes – more recipes are coming!
Spring Cleaning, Body Cleansing

Bird soaring high in the sky
Why April 15 – May 15? A few reasons. It’s after spring break, after the Easter holiday, after the tax stress and a good month before most will be sporting short-shorts and bathing suit bottoms. Aside from that, it just feels right.
I’ll be posting my diet and supplement info here, along with some feedback about how it’s going. I hope you can join me and commit to 30 days of fresh foods, detox, rejuvenation and restoration. It may be trying, but we’ll be here doing it together. You can leave comments too, and I’ll happily respond (or others may as well).
If you have a chronic health condition, sugar imbalance or other major medical, please seek the advice of your doctor. I’m not posting this info for radical claims or treatment for ANYONE! It’s just a cleansing program for 30 days that will make you feel great, and if you need to loose weight, that will probably happen as well. As we eat as nature intended and get rid of the overload of toxins, our bodies naturally find the right weight. Trust that.
I can’t wait to start! Yes, a part of me dreads it, as always, but I know how amazing I’ll feel and will soar like a bird in complete harmony! Join me?
Check in for shopping lists and cleanse preparation soon. Let me know who’s on board!
Low Cost Health
Thursday, March 18th, 2010With the state of the ecomony and unemployment, it’s hard to spend a precious dollar for a whey protein with-a-scoop-of-acai-and-a-shot-of-ginseng shake in the name of health. I’m glad I don’t sell whey protein with-a-scoop-of-acai-and-a-shot-of-ginseng shakes. However, there are still ways that you can stay healthy without breaking the bank. I know it’s hard to be encouraged about a bright future and complete happiness when you are facing dire straights. Believe me, I’ve lived there. And when you care about your own health, and those you love, it’s even harder. Anyone’s willpower will be tempted by the almost-healthy looking fast-food burrito on the billboard for $1.99 when they have financial stress. Just once, you say. Before you know it, the fast-food joint is taking in lots of $3.59′s for combo meals. Then comes other areas of neglect. The “I can’t afford it” mentality sets in and 20 lbs and one heart-scare later, we have a problem.
Here are some tips to continue living a healthy, organic lifestyle on the tightest of budgets.
Food:
Not sure if you caught that video I shot a while back – the Shopping Spree. It’s a telling account of what you can get at the market if you shop wisely. If you aren’t privey to a whole foods or natural market, it can be a bit more difficult, but not impossible. When I did the price comparison between organic food vs. non-organic at completely different stores, the price difference was $.41. That’s 41 cents my friend. Here’s how.
Buy in bulk – Now I don’t mean go to Costco and get a whole case of sodas. I mean buy in bulk like bulk nuts, dried fruits, flours, oats, grains, beans – pretty much all of your staple cooking items. What you can’t get at a grocer in bulk, try a local farmer or even on-line. You can seriously stock up with some raw materials and herbs online at amazing prices. This will help your medicine cabinet as well as teas. The other way to shop cheap at organic stores is to purchase the stores private label products. Most every mid-large sized health store will carry virtually their own “brand” of product and it’s cheaper. Guess what – 99% of the time it’s the same exact ingredients you’ll find in “name” brands. Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s are well-known natural markets, but there are plenty of others that do this same practice…Henry’s, Richards…give me a location and I’ll find you cheap organic food products!
Health Care -
Whether you believe it or not, there are some more affordable healthcare plans available. If you are short on spendable cash and in relatively good health, consider looking at your options. I’ve got a great, but basic, plan that affords me doctor’s visits if I need, with not a huge co-pay, but I don’t have a lot of frills. Compared to my friends, my plan saves me about $250.00/month! I’m covered for accidents, all major medical, etc., but I sacrifice on the things that supposedly make some plans so “great.” Insurance is insurance, it shouldn’t be a regular activity to use it, unless as stated, there are health issues that need constant attention.
Barter:
I am the queen of bartering. If you’ve got something I want, I’ll find something of mine that you need and everyone goes home happy. As a health practitioner and massage therapist, I have bartered for things that you might think are ridiculous. Someone needs or wants a massage but doesn’t have the money, I get my house cleaned. You get the idea. The point is, don’t be embarrassed to barter for services or goods that will improve your health or life. Just offer something of value (with a sincere heart) and I bet you’ll find a taker. Massage therapists, yoga classes, even chiropractors and other healing professionals – we tend to have a passion and a heart for what we do so wanting to do an exchange is usually seen as a gift.
Having financial stress or being unemployed can be difficult, but shouldn’t be a license to sit on the couch, eat cheetos and neglect yourself. Take the time to be creative, pay attention to your body, feed it well and maybe your creative mind will find ways to make new relationships through bartering or a visit to your local farmer.
Take care of your self and recognize this obstacle as an opportunity to expand your life, not debilitate it.
FDA – The Food & Drug Abomination

Genetically Modified Food
The FDA is not protecting us. Ajinomoto’s newly branded “Aminosweet” (read: aspartame) just sparked my fire once again with regards to how poor of a job this nation is doing with nutrition. And the FDA is allowing it. From artificial chemicals to genetically modified foods, sweetners that destroy our health (Mercola’s site for a good read), we are becoming chemically filled zombies, with a rate of disease and obesity that is our of control. The substances that the FDA allows in our “food” is atrocious. To make it worse, we’re not only feeding our children this crap, we encourage it because these unidentifiable scientific substances comes in pretty, shiny boxes with lots of colors. (ModernSage) Obviously, our trusted and well-paid staff of THE FDA is not doing a damn thing about it, so it’s left into the hands of us. It requires two things: 1 – we use our God-given smarts and 2 – we make choices accordingly.
Yes, we are a people easily influenced, BUT, we are influencial people. If enough stop buying that garbage they call food, they will pay attention. Someday. We’ve already seen a drastic movement to organic lifestyle in the mainstream, and the FDA trying to get there hands in the “alternative supplement” world. Why? There’s a lot of money in that industry.
Let’s not take it any longer. Do your own research. Just because the FDA “approves” something doesn’t mean it’s safe. More than likely, there’s a lot of money behind that decision and it’s not money that’s going toward the health of you or your family.
This subject is a passion of mine, and should be yours. This is a large topic, and there will be more to come. In the meantime, if you’re at work and want to do a bit of research, grab a box of whatchamacallit and see for yourself – just type in one of the 50 ingredients and see what you think.
Help me stop the madness. Eat real food
My “Crappy” Superbowl Party
Thursday, February 11th, 2010As a health writer, I can discuss things most people won’t. Halitosis. B.O. Hormones and these pesky chin whiskers, herbs that enhance sex… it’s what I do, what can I say. This story, however, is a bit revealing – and comical in a twisted sort of way – but there is a good health issue at hand. Constipation. Here’s my Crappy Superbowl Party story. March is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month by the way.
It was a SuperBowl I’ll never forget. It just happened last week for crying out loud! Superbowl XLIV. I was at a party, a small gathering of my gay boyfriends. I’m straight, they are all gay, I’m the only woman – go ahead, psychoanalyze that Freud. Anyway, it was all I could do to get to the party. I had recently started a 6 week contract job, was finishing a writing project, had a TV shoot the day before and 3 weeks prior had a death in my family. ‘XLIV’ pretty much summed it up– no life left. On top of all that, I hadn’t gone number 2 in about 7 days. I KNOW!! I was seriously backed up, and felt like crap.
Of course my gay bf’s had lots of yummy food to eat, so eat I did. And by the end of the first quarter I thought I was going to explode. The pain, the bloating, the weariness. I needed help. Luckily these men love me and I figured if I could talk to anyone about anal issues, it was them. In the moment of my not so quite desperation, one bf recommended an enema. I needed it “right now.” For some strange reason, eh-hum, he had an enema bottle on-hand. After sterilization and some icky lube, I was able to find victory during the 3rd quarter. “We won!” I said, returning to the living room with a bounce in my step.
I’m not proud that I was constipated and had to use my bf’s enema bottle, but it did entice an interesting post Superbowl conversation about colon health and colonics. I’ve had issues with elimination most of my life and know, by now, that STRESS and dietary changes are the main culprits that keep me from “winning” on a daily basis. A healthy body and bowel should eliminate at least 1-2 times a day, if not three. It really is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, and over 655,000 deaths a year are due to colon cancer. Risk factors include family history, polyps in the colon or age 50 +. If you are stressed or are having poopage problems for other reasons, you may consider a colon cleanse, natural fibers like flax or some gentle yoga exercises. That week was miserable, prompting strict attention to my precious colon. Nothing is worth the stress of ill-health.
Thanks bf’s! It was a great party (btw, who won that game?)
